The Complete Beginner's Guide
Handicrafts have always been a powerful form of expression. But when we combine this art with sustainability, we create something even more meaningful: unique pieces that respect the planet and carry stories in their fibres. If you're just starting out in this world - whether out of a love of handmade or a desire to live more consciously - this guide is for you.
Here I share everything I wish I'd read when I took my first steps into sustainable crafts. No ready-made formulas, but practical suggestions and real inspiration.
What are sustainable crafts?
First of all, it's important to realise that sustainable craftsmanship goes beyond reusing materials. It's a practice that involves conscious choices, respect for the environment and valuing manual processes. Instead of consuming new resources, we work with what already exists - reused fabrics, recycled paper, waste wood, among others.
More than a trend, it's a philosophy of life. A way of creating beauty without waste.
Why start with sustainability?
There's something very special about turning rubbish into something useful or decorative. But the benefits go far beyond aesthetics:
Waste reduction
Every piece you create with reused materials saves something from going to waste. It's as simple as that - and profoundly transformative.
Stimulating creativity
Working with what you have at hand develops creativity in a unique way. Improvisation becomes an ally, and each project becomes a discovery.
Connection to the process
By making with your own hands, you reconnect with time, patience and the history of materials. This changes the way we consume - and produce.
Accessibility
You don't need a lot of money to get started. The materials are often at home: an old shirt, a glass jar, a scrap forgotten in the back of a drawer.

Sustainable materials to get you started
Below, I'll share some ideas for materials that I often use and that you can start gathering in your own home:
- Reused fabricsold clothes, sheets, scraps.
- Recycled papernewspapers, magazines, cereal boxes.
- Glass and jarsideal for decoration or organisation.
- Waste woodleftover joinery, pallets.
- Caps, corks, canssmall elements that can turn into big ideas.
Remember: it all starts with looking. By changing the way you see objects, you discover possibilities in every corner.
Simple techniques for beginners
You don't need to master many techniques to get started. Here are some accessible suggestions:
Creative sewing
With just a few hand stitches, you can turn old fabrics into bags, trinkets or small ornaments. The stitching doesn't have to be perfect - it just needs to be done with care.
Collage and handmade stationery
With recycled paper, white glue and a pair of scissors, you can create cards, decorative pictures or personalised notebooks.
Painting and stencilling
Glass bottles, boxes and even cans are given new life with water-based paints and simple moulds. It's a fun way to experiment with colours and shapes.
Upcycling furniture
Small pieces of old furniture can be creatively sanded, painted and repurposed. An old stool can become a charming bedside table.
Where do you look for inspiration?
Inspiration can come from many places: nature, a childhood memory, a practical need or even a conversation with a loved one. But if you want more concrete references:
